WHO WE ARE...

Picture
The Swarthmore Horticultural Society (SHS) is a volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing Swarthmore's public landscapes. Founded in 2001 by a group of Swarthmore gardeners headed by Charles Cresson, noted horticulturist and author, SHS designs, plants, and maintains gardens in Swarthmore's public spaces for visitors and residents to enjoy from early spring to the onset of winter. SHS gardens now beautify Swarthmore's Borough Hall, Town Clock plaza, Co-op, Gateway Park, Centennial Park, and Post Office.

The society welcomes all new members.  Basic membership is just $25!  If you wish to also contribute your time and skills to our organization, we always need people to help in our gardens, to plan events, and to assist with the running of our organization. If you do have the time and interest to take an active role in our organization, let us know on the membership form.   You can download a membership form by clicking on the MEMBERSHIP FORM BUTTON BELOW.

✾For any questions or more information about membership, contact Anne Papa, Membership Chair, at [email protected].

MEMBERSHIP PERKS

By becoming a member, you provide the vital support needed for us to continue our work.  Although the actual designing, planting, weeding, and watering done in the SHS gardens are performed by volunteers, SHS incurs significant costs, purchasing thousands of bulbs, tropicals, and annuals to replant each of their gardens twice a year (spring & fall).

As an SHS member, you also have the opportunity to
  • Join our garden managers in their spring buying trip to Lancaster County nurseries:  get great gardening tips and great prices at hand-picked nurseries.
  • Attend our annual cocktail party to celebrate the end of the gardening season (This is free, as our thank you to you!)
  • Join a gardening team and hone your gardening skills.
