2014 Gardens
Spring 2014 in the SHS Gardens....
SPRING!
The winter of 2013-2014 was a record-breaker in terms of cold and winter storms , and it was a heart-breaker for gardeners. Camellias, hydrangeas , and many other shrubs struggled to survive, and many lost their 2014 blooms . The pansies and kale planted in October 2013 in the SHS town gardens did not last far into 2014 thanks to a series of polar vortexes and ice. However, by mid-March, the intrepid bulbs poked their noses out of the ground and the first signs of spring arrived in the borough.

✾ Borough Hall Gardens -
Raised Bed, Library Window, Library Window East, & Park Slope
The SHS Borough Hall gardens were stocked with bulbs in October 2013 to provide a cascade of color throughout the spring. New pansies were added to supplement the bulbs.
At left, in early May, oases of irises dotted the Park Slope Garden (between the Park Avenue sidewalk and the Borough Hall parking lot). ➜

War Memorial, Centennial Park, and Dartmouth Avenue Gardens
- The War Memorial Garden, at the corner of Dartmouth & Park Avenues, was a eye-popping riot of color throughout the spring.
- Directly across Dartmouth Avenue from the War Memorial Garden is Centennial Park, a small plaza where you can rest on the benches and enjoy a snack and the view of beautiful flowers.
- The SHS Dartmouth Avenue Garden adjoins the Borough Hall parking lot, but faces Aria and the Co-op, greeting stollers down Dartmouth Avenue.

✾ Co-op, Lincoln Way, & Clock Tower Gardens
⬅ The Co-op Garden, surrounding the Co-op patio, again was a feast for the eyes and the stomach as it featured edible flora along with poppies, tulips, iris and daffodils. Red Russian kale, ornamental mustard, and Flashy Trout Back leaf lettuce were just some of the edible plants gracing the Co-op garden in April.

- Lincoln Way, the newest SHS garden, sits across from the Co-op where Lincoln Way intersects with Myers Avenue. It features mostly shade-tolerant plants, so shade garden owners can find their inspiration there!
- The Clock Tower Garden is anchored by several shrubs and large containers.
